What's the difference between handmade and commercial soap?
Although you have been using "soap" all your life,
it may surprise you to learn that most commercial soaps are not
really soap, but synthetic detergent bars. While detergent
bars can certainly get you clean, all their glycerin is removed,
so they can be drying to your skin.
Handmade soap, by contrast, is just that. It's pure, 100% soap
with all of its naturally-occurring, skin-loving glycerin intact.
I've heard that lye can be dangerous. Do you use lye to make
your soap?
When handmade soap is properly made and cured, it contains no
lye. However, lye is used in the soapmaking process. In
fact, it is not possible to make soap without lye. To make soap,
lye, water and oils are combined in a chemical process called
saponification. Modern soapmakers have accurate scales and consistently
high quality ingredients readily available. That's why our soaps
are gentle and mild, instead of harsh like the soap made in the
olden days.

Why is handmade soap softer than commercial soap?
You might notice that handmade soap can be dented if dropped or
scraped with a fingernail. When it's humid, the soap may feel and
look tacky or show moist beads on the surface. These features are
due to glycerin. Because of its high glycerin content, handmade
soap is somewhat softer and moister to the touch than commercial
detergent bars.
How can I make my soap last longer?
To make handmade soap last as long as possible, unwrap and expose
it to the air as soon as it's delivered to you. Because the glycerin
attracts moisture from the air, keep handmade soap as dry as possible.
Don't store it in plastic bags, as the soap may become wet or soggy
if it can't breathe. Extend its life by keeping it in a well-drained
soap dish, out of direct contact with your shower spray.
